Software Development Engineer, Search Relevance Measurement

We are seeking a skilled Software Development Engineer to join our team at Amazon. As a member of our Search Relevance Measurement team, you will play a critical role in building innovative systems and tools to measure search relevance. Your work will have a significant impact on the design, architecture, and development of Amazon Search Measurement, which is crucial for the Search business.

Amazon Search Science is responsible for building the core machine learning algorithms used by hundreds of millions of customers worldwide to discover products to buy amongst billions of available items at Amazon.com.

The Relevance Measurement team builds systems and metrics powered by search and browse attributed user behavioral datasets that are used by search algorithms. Our mission is to improve relevance and search quality for Amazon customers. We analyze petabytes of data to enable Amazon Search to measure customer success metrics and identify ways to improve search.

As a Software Development Engineer, you will create and maintain large-scale systems that will help us better understand customer behavior, highlight pain points, and identify opportunities to improve search for Amazon customers. Your focus will be on designing, developing, and implementing full-stack applications, UX, data pipelines, analytics, and debuggability tools that will provide valuable insights into customer feedback and behavior.

You will work closely with a stellar team of engineers, applied scientists, business intelligence engineers, and product managers to ensure Amazon's data is a powerful and innovative business advantage.

A day in the life:

  1. On-call for maintenance of Airflow DAGs and EMR jobs which build Data Cubes for Search metrics and Model Training data.
  2. Build UX for Analytics portal for 100+ customers.
  3. Build Services and Library for Sampling, Snapshotting, Labelling, and Scoring Search.
  4. Build Services for LLM inference, distillation, fine-tuning, and prompt caching.
  5. Solve for Policy Engine Risks and Software Risks.
  6. Generate offender clusters and insights for Search debuggability.
  7. Build tools for debugging Search layerwise.
  8. Build ML applications for time series analysis and hypothesis testing for A/B testing Search algorithms.

Requirements:

  1. 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  2. 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems experience.
  3. Experience programming with at least one software programming language.
  4. 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience.
  5. Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.
  6. Strong object-oriented design and coding skills (C/C++ and/or Java preferably on a UNIX or Linux platform).
  7. Knowledge of Python or other scripting languages a plus.
  8. Experience with distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational databases.
  9. Experience in ML and/or statistics background is preferable.
  10. Experience in map-reduce, EMR, or Spark highly preferred.
  11. Ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.
  12. Deal well with ambiguous/undefined problems; ability to think abstractly.
  13. Previous technical internship(s) preferred.
  14. Competitive Coding experience preferred.
