About This Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Benefits Specialist to join our team in Isle of Wight, VA. As a key member of our organization, you will play a vital role in determining eligibility for various social services and government assistance programs.

Job Summary

The Benefits Specialist will be responsible for conducting interviews with individuals to determine their eligibility for benefits and re-determining their continuing eligibility. You will also explain the nature of temporary assistance benefit programs and determine the reasons and need for assistance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough interviews with applicants to determine their eligibility for benefits
  • Determine the need for and amount of allowances for special circumstance items
  • Evaluate consistency and completeness of data secured, and substantiate its accuracy where necessary
  • Compute assistance plans
  • Determine eligibility for assistance and benefit levels using automated systems and manual methods
  • Interpret policies and procedures applicable to various programs
  • Monitor cases for changes in recipient circumstances and implement changes as necessary
  • Evaluate employability status of clients and explore potential sources of income
  • Refer clients to service workers as needed
  • Maintain accurate records and reports
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Basic human behavior knowledge
  • Mathematics skills to calculate percentages, formulas, and averages
  • Interviewing techniques such as data collection and investigation
  • Practices of public service organizations
  • Economic and basic human behavior knowledge
  • Financial assistance programs knowledge sufficient to determine/re-determine eligibility for benefits
  • Eligibility requirements for social service assistance knowledge as outlined by State, Local, and Federal guidelines, regulations, and policies
  • Operating a personal computer and associated office software
Preferred Qualifications

We prefer candidates with:

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with a driving record that meets agency standards
