Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Biomedical Scientist to lead our Haematology and Blood Transfusion department. As a section lead, you will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and performance of the Routine Haematology Department, including the maintenance, calibration, and quality control of automated and semi-automated equipment.

Main Responsibilities
  • Deputise for the Lead BMS during periods of absence.
  • Assist with the supervision and performance of the Routine Haematology Department.
  • Teach and train staff on technical aspects of Haematology, with specific responsibility for supervising basic and post-basic qualification project work.
  • Assist with the general maintenance, calibration, and quality control of automated and semi-automated equipment in Haematology.
  • Authorise completed work for printing of reports, initiate further investigation as needed, and bring to the attention of medical staff results requiring clinical judgement and comment.
  • Participate in staff appraisals and assist in the development of Personal Development Plans.
  • Contribute to the Blood Sciences Quality Management system under the guidance of the Lead and/or Head BMS.
  • Contribute to the general management function of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department.
Requirements
  • Registered with the HCPC as a BMS.
  • MSc in a related discipline.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Experience working within a diagnostic lab, post-registration.
  • Experience in a Blood Sciences laboratory.
  • Working knowledge of all blood sciences disciplines.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems/requirements.
Desirable
  • Experience of a UKAS assessment.
  • Leadership training undertaken.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of QMS.
  • Automated Haematology experience/qualification.
  • Sound technical knowledge.
  • Organisational skills to run a laboratory section and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to train staff at all levels and monitor competency requirements.
  • Computer keyboard skills and use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.
  • Clear understanding of ISO 15189:2022 standards.
Special Circumstances
  • Able to travel to other sites.
  • Willing to participate in out-of-hours work.
