Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant in Haematology to join our team at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. As a Consultant in Haematology, you will be responsible for providing clinical haematology care, including outpatient, day care, and in-patient review. You will also be involved in the management of patients with malignant haematological diseases and will work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To provide clinical haematology care, including outpatient, day care, and in-patient review.
  • To manage patients with malignant haematological diseases and work closely with other healthcare professionals.
  • To deal with clinical haematology referrals from clinical colleagues from other disciplines.
  • To deal with inpatient referrals, Choose and Book referrals, and advice and guidance from general practitioners.

Laboratory Responsibilities

  • To provide laboratory services, including blood film and marrow review, laboratory, anticoagulant, and transfusion support.
  • To provide clinical liaison for service users from hospital and community teams.
  • To ensure consistently high standards of performance are achieved and maintained in the laboratories.
  • To collaborate with biomedical scientists and other members of the laboratory staff.

Management/Service Development Responsibilities

  • To share laboratory management services and clinical management duties with consultant haematologist colleagues.
  • To actively participate in service development programmes undertaken by the department.

Education and Training

  • To participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes and teaching of other healthcare professionals.
  • To participate in appraisal and assessment of junior medical colleagues, if required.
  • To maintain an up-to-date job plan and personal development plan.
  • To register and participate in an appropriate CPD scheme.
  • To participate in Trust Mandatory Training, as required.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
  • Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.

Clinical Experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Haematology.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of Haematological conditions.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Management Experience

  • Ability to organise and manage daily working priorities.
  • Experience of audit.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets.
  • Leadership qualities.

Teaching Experience

  • Experience of supervising FY1s and STs.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills.

Research Experience

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.

Other

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, and other agencies.
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels.
