Job Description:

At the City of Birmingham, we are seeking a highly skilled Firefighter to join our team. As a Firefighter, you will be responsible for responding to emergency calls, combating fires, and providing medical assistance to those in need.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer non-invasive medical care to patients, following accepted medical guidelines.
  • Ensure the proper operation of firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  • Conduct fire safety activities to reduce the risk of fire-related incidents.
  • Deploy fire hoses and appliances to suppress fires.
  • Carry out orders from officers and incident commanders to extinguish fires and ensure life safety.
  • Operate aerial and ground ladders to complete operations.
  • Assist in developing pre-fire plans to prevent and minimize damage from fire-related incidents.
  • Participate in community-related activities to project a positive image of the department.
  • Minimize property loss by inspecting scenes and determining what debris to preserve for investigation.
  • Locate and remove victims from incident scenes using specialized rescue techniques and equipment.
  • Participate in the maintenance and appearance of fire stations.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Valid driver's license.

Certifications:

  • Fire Fighter I or Fire Fighter I/II certification from a Pro Board or IFSAC accredited organization may be exempt from the written examination.

Work Environment:

  • Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors, in various environments.
  • May be exposed to hazardous weather conditions, roadway traffic, and infectious diseases.

Physical Demands:

  • Job involves moderate physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, and crawling.
  • May involve lifting items or objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
