About the Role

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to join our Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group in a leading research and development role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement advanced data analysis techniques for ocean acoustic measurements
  • Plan and lead experimental work, including in-situ and off-shore trials, to advance the field of underwater acoustics
  • Design and maintain data acquisition software for NPL's specialized laboratory facilities
  • Contribute to collaborative research projects with NPL's partners, both nationally and internationally
  • Lead technical work on NPL projects, including proposal development and supervision of junior staff
  • Contribute to scientific output through journal publications and conferences, and represent the UK on technical standards committees

About You

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering NPL's scientific work, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a similar Engineer or Scientist role, with a significant scientific profile
  • Demonstrable scientific understanding of ocean acoustics and marine acoustic technology
  • Graduate or post-graduate qualification in Physics or Acoustics or a related discipline
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in supporting and developing junior members of the team
  • In-depth understanding of the underlying physical principles, and the ability to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions
  • Experience in developing software for data acquisition for acoustic measurements, ideally using LabView
  • Ability to work to deadlines within a team
  • Business awareness
