About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented General Practice Assistant to join our team at Ash Trees Surgery. As a General Practice Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our GPs with the smooth running of clinics, allowing them to focus on patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patients, adhering to our internal appointment allocation process.
  • Prepare patients for consultations by taking brief histories and basic readings, ensuring they are ready for their appointment with the GP.
  • Complete basic forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign, such as insurance forms, mortgage, and benefits agency forms.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients in accordance with NHS guidance.
  • Assist the GP in liaising with outside agencies, getting an on-call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP continues with consultations.
  • Sort clinical post and prioritize tasks for the GP, signposting some post to other members of staff, such as the Clinical Pharmacist.
  • Extract information from clinical letters that requires coding, adding it to patient notes, and supporting with QOF reviews.

Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • A high level of competence in patient care and working with the public.
  • Experience in documenting medical details.
  • Experience of referring to senior colleagues when necessary.

Desirable skills and experience include:

  • Experience of applying theoretical learning to practical situations.
  • Experience of managing health records.
  • Experience of common examination procedures.
