About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Team Leader to join our team at Colchester Zoo Limited. This is a full-time position with an average of 40 hours a week, including regular weekend work and increased hours during busy periods.

Job Purpose

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out husbandry duties and maintaining high standards of welfare for a range of animal species in their care. As a Deputy Team Leader, they will also be required to input ideas for the continual progression and development of animal husbandry, breeding management, and enclosure design on the section.

The role requires excellent communication and presentation skills to deliver animal encounters and experiences, as well as educational sessions and media content.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional husbandry standards and welfare for a variety of species.
  • Manage employed and voluntary members of the animal section and lead the section in the Team Leader's absence.
  • Develop and implement safe working practices across the animal section.
  • Deliver engaging enclosure encounters and experiences to zoo visitors, educational groups, and social media platforms.
  • Represent Colchester Zoo in external settings when required.
Requirements
  • 7+ years' experience in a zoological collection, including extensive experience with category 1 species.
  • Excellent standard of practical skill in animal husbandry, including training and enrichment.
  • Excellent observation skills and ability to develop animal husbandry, breeding management, and enclosure design.
  • Ability to manage the animal section in the absence of the Team Leader with limited assistance.
  • Excellent knowledge of ZIMS, zoo licensing, and legislation.
  • Ability to handle and restrain various species confidently.
  • Knowledge of water quality parameters and management for different species.
  • Experience in operating filtration systems and life support systems.
  • Knowledge of UV requirements for various species.
