Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Cognitive Behavioural Therapist to join our team at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. As a Community Learning Disability Nurse, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of our new Young People's Specialist Support Team service, working with children and young people with severe learning disabilities and complex needs.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a multi-agency team, comprising clinical psychology, learning disability nursing, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and support workers. You will be working alongside local respite and short breaks services to create, instigate, and support person-centred positive behaviour support plans, aiming to improve the quality of life for this group of children and young people and reduce any restrictions or restraints.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, you will have experience working with children and young people with learning disabilities and complex needs, including autism and behaviour that challenges. You will have developed skills in assessment, formulation, intervention, and evaluation, and have experience working in multi-agency settings.

You will be responsible for managing risk in children with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, and have experience of using principles of positive behavioural support and developing PBS plans. You will also have experience of administration and organisation for caseload management, prioritising demands, and consulting with other professionals.

Working for Our Organisation

This is a chance to be involved in helping to deliver a service based on the principles of the Ealing Model, including positive behavioural support and trauma-informed interventions. You will support the consultant lead with the mobilisation of this model across our five localities, linking to the dynamic risk register and working alongside families.

This is a role that will truly enable you to make a system-wide difference to children with severe learning disabilities and complex needs. You will have the opportunity to work with a small number of children and young people who have been identified as having complex needs, and develop person-centred positive behaviour support plans to improve their quality of life.

Person Specification

We are looking for a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Relevant health or social care qualification with current professional registration
  • NMC registration
  • Post-registration qualifications in related subjects, such as Positive Behavioural Support, Community Specialist Practitioner, or Autism
  • Experience working with children and young people with learning disabilities and complex needs, including autism and behaviour that challenges
  • Experience of using principles of positive behavioural support and developing PBS plans
  • Experience of administration and organisation for caseload management, prioritising demands, and consulting with other professionals
Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including observation, listening, and empathy skills
  • Experience of completing individual assessments with children, young people, and families
  • Experience of completing specialist assessments, such as behavioural assessments and formulations
  • Ability to implement packages of care
  • Ability to reflect, appraise, and evaluate learning from experience
  • Ability to identify own learning needs
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively with different agencies
Work-Related Circumstances

We require the successful candidate to have a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs.
