About the Role

We are seeking an ambitious and motivated Specialist Paediatric Orthoptist to join our newly revised and evolving service at Torbay Hospital.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in Face to Face and Virtual clinics within an Extended Role, undertaking single-handed clinics at peripheral clinics as required across the trust.

We are a forward-thinking department with a successful team of highly trained orthoptists and optometrists working in extended roles, including Glaucoma, Medical Retina, Diabetic Retina, Cornea and Anterior Segment, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Stroke, Adults and Children with Learning Difficulties, Low Vision, Contact Lens, Marfan's Screening, and Keratoconus/Ectasia Virtual Monitoring.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communicate initial diagnoses tactfully, explaining complex medical conditions to patients with no prior knowledge of ocular defects.
  • Work with the Lead Orthoptist for Retinal Disease to provide efficient clinical patient care at Masters Degree level, possessing relevant post-graduate professional qualifications and accreditation.
  • Review patients in joint clinics with medical colleagues, making independent clinical decisions using advanced clinical reasoning skills and interpretation of multi-stranded diagnostic testing.
  • Assist surgeons in post-operative adjustable surgery techniques, while patients are under local anaesthetic.
  • Develop and review WAMD protocols, competencies, and pathways for AHPs and other non-medical practitioners, implementing changes to affect different staff groups.
  • Deliver Orthoptic training and assess allied health professionals involved in patient care, as well as teach other AHPs who wish to extend into a WAMD role.
Person Specification
  • HCPC registration
  • Recognised degree in Orthoptics

Desirable qualifications include External Wet AMD qualification and Internal accreditation.
