Job Summary

This Correctional Health Services Physician position is a key member of the multidisciplinary team at the institution, operating a Doctor's Office Practice within the correctional center. The practice is supported by a Nurse Manager, who oversees the health services system. Providing expert medical care and medication management to inmates, the Physician focuses on analyzing patient histories, symptoms, and diagnostic information to develop accurate diagnoses. Responsible for treating acute health care problems, including illnesses, infections, and injuries, the Physician recommends diagnostic or therapeutic interventions, considering factors such as safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy. Additionally, the Physician prescribes medications, assists with treatment plans, and educates patients on self-management of acute or chronic illnesses.

Responsibilities
  • Provide professional medical care and medication management to inmates.
  • Analyze patient histories, symptoms, and diagnostic information to develop accurate diagnoses.
  • Treat acute health care problems, including illnesses, infections, and injuries.
  • Recommend diagnostic or therapeutic interventions, considering factors such as safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy.
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost.
  • Assist with preparation and modification of treatment plans.
  • Educate patients on self-management of acute or chronic illnesses.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited medical college.
  • Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty.
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia.
  • Board eligible or certified in a primary care specialty.
  • Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness and current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
