Key Responsibilities- Provide high-quality clinical care to patients with gastrointestinal complaints, including emergency and elective procedures.
- Participate in the gastroenterology on-call rota, ensuring seamless coverage and timely response to patient needs.
- Contribute to the audit and governance of our department, driving quality improvement and ensuring compliance with national and local standards.
- Support the training and development of junior medical staff, fostering a culture of excellence and knowledge sharing.
- Engage in administrative duties, including clinical record-keeping, reporting, and data analysis.
- Participate in the Upper GI/Hepatobiliary Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), contributing to the development of comprehensive care plans and ensuring seamless patient pathways.
- Develop and maintain enhanced clinical skills, particularly in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
- Collaborate with colleagues to achieve clinical and quality targets, driving service improvement and excellence.
- Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways, ensuring continuity of care and optimal outcomes.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is a leading provider of acute hospital services, serving a population of around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales. Our trust encompasses a diverse range of communities, from the picturesque Cambrian Mountains to the fringes of the Black Country. Our main hospitals, the Princess Royal Hospital and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, offer a wide range of acute services, including accident and emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care, and critical care.
Job Plan and Working ArrangementsA formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, outlining the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. The job plan will be reviewed annually and will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. The job plan will be divided into three main components:
- Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care, including clinical activity, clinically related activity, and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
- Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), including CPD, audit, teaching, and research, with a focus on supporting revalidation and contributing to trust priorities.
- Out-of-Hours Activity, including participation in the on-call rota for gastrointestinal bleeds, with a frequency of approximately 1 in 10.
The allocation of PAs will be reviewed and may be subject to adjustment when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan.
