  • Attend national, network, and local meetings as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate a firm commitment to clinical governance, including participation in effective clinical audit and continuing medical education.
  • Co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services.
  • Contribute to management within the Trust through the CMG.
  • Participate in all teaching programs for medical staff, medical students, and other hospital employees as required.
  • Be included with other consultants in the On-call and Receiving On-call Consultant rotas.
  • Comply with departmental and Trust policies and procedures.

Job Description: To be a core member of a dynamic medical team aiming to deliver first-class cancer care to the East Midlands. To specialise in the delivery of SACT/radiotherapy for Head and Neck malignancies. Participate in the Head and Neck MDTs, working closely with surgical, Palliative Care, and Oncology colleagues to provide a seamless service. Demonstrate active participation in clinical trials, helping to drive up trial recruitment and standards of care. Provide leadership in clinical trials development and have an interest in clinical research. Take an active role in undergraduate teaching. Carry out appropriate administration duties necessary to support the job. Supervision, education, and appraisal of junior staff. Liaise closely with other specialties, departments, and outside agencies in contributing to meeting the objectives of the Clinical Management Team. Take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust's Critical Incident Policy, are reported in a timely manner. Actively participate in audit. Participate in yearly appraisal and the job planning process. Undertake Mandatory and Statutory training as directed by the Trust and Clinical Management Team. Undertake a clinical managerial or leadership role at an appropriate point to meet the needs and objectives of the department.

Person Specification: Essential qualifications include MBBS or equivalent, GMC Registration with a license to practice, MRCP/FRCP/FRCR or equivalent, and Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date or experience in a similar role in the UK. Desirable qualifications include a Higher degree, eg MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent, and Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.

Experience: Essential experience includes Fully training in Clinical Oncology, Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan, Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems, Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems, demonstrates clear logical thinking/analytical approach, understands evidence-based practice, Willingness to develop skills and experience in area of interest, and IT skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word, etc. Desirable experience includes Demonstrable experience/interest in Head and Neck cancer treatment and broad experience in other tumour sites, Experience in AOS, Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.

Management: Essential management skills include Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors, Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles, Ability to effectively organise, prioritise, and manage clinical workload, Ability to prioritise time and information effectively, Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS, Willingness to work as a member of the team and share administrative responsibilities, Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues. Desirable management skills include Evidence of management and administrative experience, Management training on an accredited course, Awareness of service development issues, Awareness of Oncology at a national level.

Communication Skills: Essential communication skills include Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues, To be empathetic and sensitive, capacity to take others' perspectives and treat others with understanding. Desirable communication skills include Highly developed emotional intelligence, High standard of presentation both written and verbal, Demonstrable track record of successful change management, Proven ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment.

Motivation: Essential motivation includes Personal integrity and reliability, Ability to motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff. Desirable motivation includes Commitment to further develop the post and the service provided.

Audit/Quality Improvement: Essential audit/quality improvement skills include Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit, Knowledge of and commitment to clinical audit, Participation in a quality improvement programme, Experience of quality improvement work and audit. Desirable audit/quality improvement skills include Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence, Completion of formal courses in audit and quality improvement, Published audit including quality improvement.

Research: Essential research skills include Understanding and interest in research, Ability to appraise research critically, Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects, Evidence of recent research and development activity. Desirable research skills include Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty.
