Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist - Early Intervention

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team in Hastings. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality psychiatric care to individuals aged 18-65 who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis or an at-risk mental state.

Main Responsibilities:
  1. Provide evidence-based interventions to service users with first episode psychosis and comorbid conditions, with a focus on regular reviews and Care Programme Approach (CPA).
  2. Support early intervention practitioners in the production of comprehensive care planning, including relapse prevention and crisis management.
  3. Lead the development of local evidence-based interventions for this caseload, in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team.
  4. Optimise the physical health of clients with first episode psychosis.
  5. Provide psychopharmacological advice consistent with guidelines developed within the wider service.
  6. Liaise with Primary Care and other statutory and non-statutory agencies to assist in the management of early intervention clients.
  7. Encourage and facilitate family/carer involvement in the delivery of packages of care.
  8. Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to seek innovative ways of engaging with service users.
  9. Participate in the planning and development of Early Intervention Services across Sussex.
  10. Contribute to improving the standards of mental health care within Sussex.
  11. Undertake responsibilities of Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act.
  12. Liaise closely with other functional teams within the locality to ensure provision of consistent and appropriate services.
  13. Manage the input of other medical staff and establish and monitor standards, including recording of clinical interventions, case summaries, and discharge summaries.
  14. Ensure that medical staff in the team have appropriate clinical supervision and training on a regular basis.
  15. Encourage and participate in team developments and training, and provide appropriate clinical leadership.
  16. Work closely with the team and other managers in the Trust.
  17. Participate in the Trust Clinical Governance Programme and contribute to Clinical Audit within the Trust.
  18. Be a core member of the Early Intervention in Psychosis Local Leadership Team, where clinical governance, service development, and finance are managed.
  19. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Person Specification:
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
Eligibility:
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty.
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning:
  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Ability to work in and lead team.
  • Participated in research or service evaluation.
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.
  • Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken.
  • Experienced in clinical research and/or service evaluation.
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit, and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations, and publications.
