Job Title: Consultant Geriatrician

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Geriatrician to join our team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality healthcare to older patients referred for diagnosis and treatment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and lead the geriatric service, working closely with colleagues to enhance patient care and outcomes.
  • Support and develop the interface frailty services for ED and relevant clinical areas, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Lead and develop integrated care working with CCGs and community partners, promoting a patient-centered approach.
  • Advocate for the care of older people within the organization, ensuring their needs are met and their voices are heard.
  • Lead, support, and mentor junior medical staff within the department, ensuring training requirements are met and junior staff are equipped to provide high-quality care.
  • Undertake work within a relevant area of interest, contributing to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
Clinical Responsibilities:
  • Provide high-quality healthcare for older patients referred for diagnosis and treatment, responding to inpatient and outpatient referrals from other specialties.
  • Provide prompt advice for General Practitioners, participating in educational and audit meetings to ensure best practice.
  • Meet CPD and revalidation requirements, contributing to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
  • Provide cover for Consultant colleagues during periods of leave, supporting the Hospital's Clinical Governance Strategy.
  • Contribute to all other aspects of the Directorate and trust affairs, ensuring the delivery of quality patient care.
Medicine for the Elderly:
  • Provide a consultant-led service in the specialty, leading daily board rounds and ward rounds on relevant wards.
  • Lead on new initiatives for the care of older people, contributing to research in Medicine for the Elderly in an area of special interest.
  • Contribute to meeting the 18-week outpatient target, the 4-hour waiting time target in the Emergency Department, and other quality indicators where relevant.
  • Contribute to community services, including the Bat 'phone and Frailty Clinic, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
Medical Education & Teaching:
  • Supervise and teach Medical Students, participating in formal teaching of the Medicine in Old Age Syllabus to Year 4 medical students.
  • Supervise and manage trainee medical staff, ensuring training requirements are met and junior staff are equipped to provide high-quality care.
  • Provide post-graduate training in Medicine for the Elderly for all grades of Medical Staff and for non-medical clinical staff.
  • Contribute to regular training and teaching sessions for General Practitioners, fostering increased knowledge and skills within the local Medical Community.
Clinical Audit/ Clinical Governance/ Research:
  • Participate in clinical audit and implement audit findings as appropriate, supporting NIHR funded research.
Continuing Professional Development:
  • Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level, implementing audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice.
  • Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, demonstrating a willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels.
