Job Summary

The Ministry of Defence is seeking a highly skilled Safety Policy Advisor to join its team. As a key member of the Royal Artillery Capability Assurance Training Team, you will be responsible for providing expert advice on safety policies and their practical application in the workplace.

This is a challenging role that requires a strong understanding of safety policies, procedures, and standards. You will work closely with the Commandant RSA and the wider Royal Artillery user community to ensure the provision of advice on equipment health and safety issues and emerging safety trends.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend DE&S Project Safety and Environmental Panels (PSEP) and implement any health and safety issues arising into relevant Royal Artillery live firing and equipment user publications to minimize risk to life.
  • Attend DE&S Safety Panels and develop effective working practices to ensure the implementation of health, safety, and environmental protection law, Army, and MOD policies for all Royal Artillery equipment and associated ancillaries, ensuring user documentation is amended or updated accordingly.
  • Review MySafety on a weekly basis to ensure all incidents involving artillery equipment, ancillaries, or munitions are logged, categorized, and reported to the appropriate authority.
  • Ensure accidents/incidents are sentenced and closed down appropriately at Project Safety and Environmental Panels (PSEP) / Safety Environmental Panels (SEP).
  • Deputise for the Artillery Safety & Tech Advisor as required.
  • Assess the impact of any changes to H&S legislation and MOD policy on live firing, RA equipment, and training to ensure currency of RA trained qualified currency and competency.
  • Assist the Artillery Safety & Tech Advisor and Royal Artillery Capability Assurance Training Team during review, revision, and re-issue of all RA live firing safety pamphlets.
  • Continue professional development for safety and environmental areas of expertise to ensure SQEP status and continued subject matter expert status with Army Headquarters Joint Effects.
Person Specification

Due to the nature and diversity of this role, the successful candidate will need to have:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Effective decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Experience working with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Desirable skills include experience in the safety environment, preferably in governmental or highly regulated environments, and familiarity with UK government safety policies, procedures, and standards.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
