The Yard and Service Operations Manager plays a pivotal role in optimizing yard and service labour, material & equipment resources to meet customer requirements. This involves ensuring that CHEP hire-stock products are supplied via hauliers within service performance criteria.

This position requires strategic planning and leadership to achieve transactional accuracy and control of physical stock holding of finished good hire-stock, raw materials, and waste processes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Safety Management: Ensure potential Zero Harm hazards are eliminated or controlled through regular reviews of work activities, equipment, and facilities. Provide employees with training and instructions on work practices, emphasizing Zero Harm and Environmental considerations while achieving required targets.
  • Security Management: Manage site security systems and manned personnel, including perimeter checks.
  • Near Miss and Hazard Reduction: Drive engagement and compliance through MOT management, Winter contingency planning, and CCTV monitoring.
  • Stock Management: Ensure stocks (finished product hired stock across all batches and raw materials) are managed to agreed trigger levels for availability. Optimize storage costs through efficient stockholding, including out-storage when necessary. Complete daily and weekly stock reconciliations and investigate stock variances.
  • Reporting and Data Management: Manage reporting of all stock and flow movements to and from the plant (and supporting outstores and TPMs) via accurate data input and timely processing. Attend network weekly stocks and flows calls. Provide information for PQCDSM Scorecard and Monthly POLT and Reports.
  • Plant Performance and Budget Management: Collect, validate, and input key plant information into SAP. Manage budgets for non-maintenance purchasing requirements. Ensure efficient use of the labour pool available on the shift, minimizing overtime and optimizing attendance through robust attendance management.
  • Activity Hours and Process Improvement: Complete daily/weekly entry and reconciliation of activity hours and ensure end-of-month release of activity hours in SAP. Contribute to and drive process improvement within the yard and service department through projects and continuous improvement.
  • Turnaround Performances and Supplier Management: Monitor and improve site turnaround performance of hauliers to network and plant targets. Adhere to appointment scheduling processes and targets where applicable. Work closely with FLT and Waste equipment suppliers to maximize machinery capability and minimize downtime.
  • Staff Management and Communication: Manage industrial relations issues within the team, including performance management, absence management, grievances, appeals, and distribute service office and yard tasks as needed. Provide short-term cover to the yard or service desk when required. Enable excellent communication channels with all employees on the team, ensuring regular updates on shifts regarding performance.
  • Training and Development: Ensure all shift members have the skills required to carry out their roles (including SAP training). Generate development plans for each individual. Support network annual staff SAP and procedure reviews.
  • Appraisal and Reward & Recognition: Ensure completion of appraisals and objective setting and review.
  • Customer Service and Procedural Compliance: Manage issues efficiently and effectively with customers, retailers, and hauliers. Ensure internal customer requests are handled promptly. Follow and complete paperwork fully to ISO 9001 standards. Support audits by CHEP internal, Brambles, and ISO 9001:2008 accreditations.
  • Purchasing and Stock Quality Audits: Plant purchasing control of direct spend (raw materials where appropriate) and indirect spend, including procedural compliance to preferred supplier lists. Manage basware issues daily. Have direct control of plant office spend GL. Conduct raw material quality control audits on inbound deliveries and contamination audits for yard hire stock.
  • Waste Management and Subcontractor Management: Manage completion of the legislative waste register for waste inbound and waste outbound. Achieve improvement in disposal and rebate costs with a sustainability target of Zero to Landfill. Organize and control contractors in the yard and service where necessary.
  • Best Practice and Plant Leadership Team: Promote the ethics and principles of lean, 5S, and teamwork through communication and setting an example. Attend and contribute to meetings and plant reporting.

About You

We're seeking an experienced leader with 2-3 years supervisory experience in high-volume manufacturing operations environments. English & Maths qualifications are essential, along with proven skills and capabilities in leadership, communication, people management, and problem-solving. An IOSH qualification is desirable, as is a FLT licence. Six-Sigma Green/Black Belt certification is also desirable. Experience leading results in extremely target-driven high-volume manufacturing/transport environments, Lean manufacturing, and process control techniques is valuable. PC literacy, particularly strong Excel and SAP skills, is required.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $120,000 per annum, depending on location and experience.
