Job Summary
The Clinical Educator will be responsible for teaching, supervising, and assessing undergraduate students in the Birmingham School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy. The role requires effective communication and liaison with a wide range of individuals, including staff and students, to ensure student welfare and academic success.
Main Responsibilities
The Clinical Educator will:
- Supervise the pre-clinical and clinical activity of student Dental Hygienists and Therapists within Birmingham Dental Hospital and Outreach clinics.
- Delegating appropriate clinical tasks to students and ensuring they follow treatment protocols and policies.
- Supervising the assessment and treatment of patients referred to BSDHT.
- Preparing and delivering teaching, lectures, and tutorial support to students in line with the General Dental Council's outcomes.
- Demonstrating operative techniques in the Clinical Skills Suite and providing feedback to students.
- Compiling, standard setting, and marking written and practical assessments in conjunction with other teaching staff.
- Participating in formative and summative assessments of students and attending examination board meetings as required.
- Providing pastoral support and care to ensure student welfare and well-being.
- Managing acute problems for patients under student care and undertaking treatments outside the skill and competence of students.
- Supervising student Dental Hygienists and Therapists during placements in other establishments.
- Monitoring the care of equipment and instruments and ensuring adequate cross-infection control and standards of professional conduct.
- Participating in audit, clinical governance, continued professional development, and research.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have:
- A BDS/BChD degree and a wide range of clinical experience.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Good organisational and teamworking skills.
- A willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing circumstances.
