Job Title: Palliative Care Specialist Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Palliative Care Specialist Nurse to join our team at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.

About the Role

As a Palliative Care Specialist Nurse, you will work closely with our well-established Hospital Palliative Care Team to provide expert care to patients with advanced illness and their families. You will be responsible for providing support to a defined caseload of patients, promoting dignity, understanding, and compassion.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist Palliative Care advice, intervention, and education to patients, families, and healthcare professionals through multidisciplinary team working in the hospital setting.
  • Provide specialist nursing expertise, facilitating evidence-based, patient-centred care for a defined caseload of patients who have complex needs.
  • Provide information and specialist advice in symptom control and psychological support to patients with cancer and non-malignant life-limiting diseases and their families.
Requirements
  • Demonstrable experience of working with Palliative Care patients at band 5 or above - hospital or community.
  • Managing own workload effectively.
  • Participation in clinical audit and evaluation.
  • Teaching, supervising, and mentoring staff. Experience of multi-professional working.
  • Experience of audit and research.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse with NMC.
  • Palliative Care qualification or willingness to undertake.
  • Advanced communication skills training. Recognised teaching qualification.
  • Ability to prescribe medication within the remit of their role.
Skills
  • Computer literacy within a range of applications.
  • Knowledge of EPR.
  • Demonstrates critical and clinical reasoning skills, underpinning complex decision-making.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of governance and palliative care guidelines.
  • Broad clinical knowledge of speciality.
  • National clinical guidelines and service frameworks relevant to palliative care.
  • CQC Standards.
