Corporate Counsel, Regulatory Expert

Amazon Japan's Legal Department is seeking a highly skilled bilingual lawyer with approximately 5-12 years' PQE to fill the position of Corporate Counsel, Regulatory Matters.

The successful candidate will primarily manage legal issues, including legal analysis, reporting, and communications, relating to the Japan Act on Improving Transparency and Fairness of Digital Platforms (Transparency Act) across all of Amazon Japan's businesses. Additionally, the candidate will provide legal review of public statements and compliance with the Transparency Act.

This role will be expected to coordinate with other Amazon legal and public policy team members in and outside Japan and at various levels on strategies and other matters related to the Transparency Act.

This role reports to a senior, long-tenured lawyer, Director and Associate General Counsel, Kensuke Imagi, and will work closely with Kensuke's broader litigation and regulatory lawyers and legal professionals.

The position will be based in Amazon Japan's Meguro headquarters, together with the Amazon Japan legal team. Amazon Japan is a flexible workplace (three times a week in-office & work twice from home). Compensation is based on experience and includes equity compensation.

  1. Licensed to practice law in Japan, US or other common law jurisdiction.
  2. Approximately 5-12 years' PQE legal experience at a top international or Japanese law firm and/or in-house legal department.
  3. Fully bilingual in Japanese and English.
  4. Extensive experience working as a dedicated litigation or regulatory attorney.
  5. Experienced attorney with strong negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills, and sound legal and business judgment.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and coordinate complex issues and projects with diverse levels of management, clients, and peers.
  7. Experience working on Japanese competition law matters.
  8. Experience working at a Japanese regulator.
