Job Purpose:

The Specialty Doctor plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality clinical care to patients, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and supporting consultants in managing patients. This position provides a balance between hands-on clinical work and professional development, and it may offer opportunities for long-term career progression, including support for completing additional qualifications or specialty exams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Clinical Responsibilities:
  • Patient Care:
  • Deliver high-quality medical or surgical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings under the supervision of a consultant.
  • Conduct assessments, investigations, diagnoses, and treatment plans for patients.
  • Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Carry out and supervise procedures relevant to the specialty.
  • On-call Duties:
  • Participate in the on-call rota as required, providing care to emergency and acute admissions.
  • Manage urgent and routine clinical problems and make appropriate referrals as necessary.
  • Multidisciplinary Teamwork:
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, junior doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Liaise with other departments and healthcare providers to ensure a seamless patient care pathway.
  • Patient Safety and Governance:
  • Contribute to maintaining high standards of patient safety.
  • Follow NHS Trust clinical governance guidelines, including reporting clinical incidents and participating in root cause analyses.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient records, treatment plans, and discharge summaries.
  • Education and Development:
  • Professional Development:
  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD), including attending relevant educational activities such as courses, workshops, and conferences.
  • Stay up to date with advances in your specialty and contribute to the implementation of best practices.
  • Teaching and Mentoring:
  • Provide supervision and teaching to junior doctors, medical students, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in departmental teaching programs and contribute to training initiatives.
  • Clinical Audits and Research:
  • Audit and Quality Improvement:
  • Participate in clinical audits and contribute to quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient care and outcomes.
  • Evaluate and implement audit findings to improve clinical services.
  • Research:
  • Support research activities within the department and contribute to clinical trials, as applicable.
  • Participate in the production of research papers or case reports for publication or presentation at national/international conferences.
  • Qualifications:
  • Medical Degree (MBBS or Equivalent):
  • A recognized medical qualification allowing registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK.
  • Full GMC Registration with a License to Practice:

  • Postgraduate Medical Experience:
  • A minimum of four years of postgraduate experience is usually required, with at least two years in a relevant specialty.
  • Relevant Specialty Experience:
  • Previous experience working within the specific specialty of the role is essential.
  • Membership of a Relevant Royal College (Desirable):
  • Depending on the specialty, additional postgraduate qualifications such as MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians), MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons), or equivalent is advantageous.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Equivalent:
  • For roles in acute specialties, ALS or equivalent certification is often required.
  • Skills and Attributes:

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Leadership and management abilities, with a commitment to patient safety and quality care.
Professional Development and Career Progression:

While the role of Specialty Doctor is not a formal training post, it offers excellent opportunities for career development. Specialty Doctors may pursue:

  • CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration): Specialty Doctors can apply for CESR to become consultants in their chosen specialty. This pathway allows doctors to demonstrate they have the same competencies as those who have completed a formal training program.
  • Senior Specialty Doctor or Associate Specialist: Progression to senior roles within the specialty.
  • Subspecialty Training: Opportunities to further specialize within a particular area of the specialty.
