Job Summary

This is a 10 Programme Activities (PA) post including on-call duties and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). With mutual agreement, it can be extended to 12 PAs. The Royal Wolverhampton Hospital offers extensive elective and emergency theatre activity, requiring wide experience in general anaesthesia for various surgical disciplines. Full specialist registration with the GMC and possession of the FRCA (or equivalent) are essential requirements.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder is expected to participate in the general on-call anaesthesia service covering both New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital.

About Us

Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust provides clinical services to Cannock Chase Hospital with seven theatres where elective orthopaedic surgery is carried out. The Directorate supports and participates in educational activities within the West Midlands region and welcomes those wishing to develop the next generation of consultants.

Job Responsibilities

  • To assist the lead in developing regional anaesthesia services according to those agreed in the job plan.
  • To have the expertise to take lead in decision-making about the suitability of high-risk patients.
  • To have the skills required to manage regional anaesthesia services, ensuring they are delivered safely and timely, benefiting both patients and the organisation.
  • To lead in developing and showcasing regional anaesthesia modules in line with the RCoA curriculum.
  • To provide anaesthetic services according to those agreed in the Job Plan and to take ongoing responsibility for patients under your care.
  • To co-operate with other general consultant anaesthetists to cover for annual, study, and professional leave.
  • To deputise for absent colleagues, as far as is practicably.
  • To ensure there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.
  • To actively engage in planning and delivering developments in the Critical Care Services Directorate for the Trust.
  • To develop and maintain such special skills and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development of the necessary anaesthesia skills as agreed at job planning and appraisal (Personal Development Plan).

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

CCT in anaesthesia (within 6 months of interview), FRCA or equivalent, and at least 6 months advanced training in Regional Anaesthesia or equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

MRCP or equivalent, ALS certification (or equivalent).

Essential Experience

Comprehensive experience in anaesthesia for DGH-type surgical specialties.

Desirable Experience

Comprehensive, recent experience in anaesthesia relevant to job plan advanced airway/ regional blocks.
