Cumbria Constabulary Kennel Hand Opportunity

We are seeking a reliable and animal-loving individual to join our team as a Kennel Hand, working on a zero-hours contract basis.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and welfare of our police dogs, including exercise, grooming, and feeding. They will also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the kennel complex and surrounding area.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Exercise and grooming of trained dogs
  • Care and tending of puppies
  • Cleanliness and hygiene of kennel complex and surrounding area
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of feed and supplies
  • Transport of dogs to and from veterinary appointments
  • Repair and maintenance of equipment
  • Vehicle cleaning

Essential criteria include:

  • Previous experience of handling dogs in a work or field capacity
  • Sound understanding of animal welfare
  • Ability to assess and respond to hazardous situations
  • Ability to read and interpret chemical and medication guidance
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work in an environment without close supervision

Desirable criteria include:

  • Previous experience of working in kennels
  • Experience of treating minor animal injuries
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant Health and Safety legislation
  • Familiarity with risk assessments
  • Ability to identify and implement working practice improvements
  • GCSE standard education
  • First Aid certificate
  • Manual Handling training
  • DIY skills
  • Experience of stock control
  • Fire precaution awareness
