Medical Assessment Board Vice Chair
At the General Medical Council, we're committed to supporting good, safe patient care across the UK. As our Tests of Competence and Revalidation Assessment Board Vice Chair, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring doctors meet the required standards.
The GMC works closely with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to set and achieve these standards. If concerns arise that these standards may not be met or public confidence is at risk, we investigate and take necessary action.
If serious concerns are raised about a doctor's performance, we may conduct a Test of Competence. This assessment includes a knowledge test and evaluation of clinical skills, tailored to the doctor's scope of practice. We also assess doctors without a Responsible Officer or Suitable Person using the revalidation assessment, which involves a specialty-specific knowledge test to decide whether to revalidate them.
You'll provide expert advice to the GMC on developing and operating these assessments. This includes supporting writing, editing, piloting, standard setting, and selecting questions and stations. You'll also support ongoing statistical analysis, enhance assessment quality, and deputise for the Board Chair when needed.
This role requires a commitment of at least six days per year for board meetings and other activities. The position is based in Manchester, but work may also involve virtual/remote tasks or occasional visits to our London office. You'll be eligible for appropriate travel, hotel, and subsistence expenses.
To be successful, you'll need demonstrable experience and standing in assessment fields, including a strong understanding of methodologies, best practices, and metrics. An academic/medical education background and/or history of publication in assessment design and delivery are also essential.
Please note that we cannot consider applications from those without assessment experience beyond examining, piloting content, or content writing.
We actively encourage diverse applications from BME doctors, female doctors, and doctors with disabilities as part of our commitment to diversity.
