Support Children's Education as a Volunteer Panel Member
East Sussex County Council is seeking volunteers to participate in Independent Appeal Panels who hear school admission appeals. As a panel member, you will play a crucial role in supporting the education of children in your community.
What is a School Admission Appeal?
Parents have the right to appeal against the decision of an admission authority to refuse their child's place at their preferred school. The appeal process involves written submissions from both parties, which are then circulated ahead of an appeal hearing. The panel member's role is to read the case papers, actively participate in the appeal hearing process, and work with other panel members to determine whether to uphold or dismiss the parent's appeal.
Your Role as a Panel Member
As a panel member, you will be sensitive to the concerns of parents and the pressures on local schools. You will need to possess good literacy, communication, and listening skills, as well as the ability to act in an objective and impartial manner. You will also need to enjoy working with other panel members and assessing evidence.
Training and Support
We will provide you with training on the legal framework of the appeal process and local procedures. You will also receive support and guidance throughout your role as a panel member.
Commitment and Working Pattern
The role is voluntary, but you will be paid out-of-pocket expenses. The hours of work will be discussed, and the working pattern will be limited throughout the year, with the busiest period being between April and July.
