About the Role

Murphy is seeking a highly skilled Design Manager to lead our Substation projects. As a key member of our Energy team, you will be responsible for managing a team of Design Coordinators and ensuring the successful delivery of HV Substation projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the engineering design delivery of HV Substation projects, including new build and extension projects.
  • Manage Design Management requirements at tender and/or Early Contractor Engagement stage, allocating resources as necessary.
  • Integrate multiple engineering disciplines, including HV Plant, Protection and Control, and Civils, from internal and external designers and OEMs.
  • Act as Principal Design Representative, ensuring design information is suitably managed and compliant with CDM 2015 Regulations.
  • Contribute to Business Unit and Group Design Management continual process improvement activities.
  • Review design pack submissions for technical compliance, quality, and completeness.
  • Develop and assist project Planners with maintaining design and engineering aspects of programmes.
  • Monitor and expedite key engineering programme issues, including procurement of services and equipment.
  • Review and liaise with internal Temporary Works Coordinators and Designers to ensure constructability and required permanent works.
  • Manage compliance with Standards and Client requirements, assisting in monitoring to ensure working to standard requirements.
  • Ensure understanding of and influence on contracts Design Consultants are working under, including fees, schedule of services, programme, and liabilities and warranties.
  • Review and comment on payment applications from consultants, passing to the contract surveyor for processing and payment.
  • Represent the department at internal and external meetings, as necessary, in the absence of the Senior Engineering Manager.
  • Line manage a sub-team of design coordinators, mentoring and assisting their development and learning.
Requirements
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary design packages on power projects.
  • Electrical engineering education (preferably to degree level) and High Voltage project design experience.
  • Experience carrying out the role of Principal Designer Representative under CDM 2015.
  • Desirable experience of delivery of substation projects for UK Transmission Service Operators.
  • Membership of a UK Engineering institute.
