About This Role

We’re looking for a highly skilled Indirect Taxation Specialist to join our team at American Express. As an Indirect Taxation Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring our company’s compliance with tax regulations and laws.

Responsibilities

  1. Determine the full indirect tax implications of new initiatives undertaken by the business or organization, including structural and organizational changes. Provide effective tax cost management advice where necessary.
  2. Communicate these implications to stakeholders, ensuring they are understood. Act as a subject matter expert on subsequent business or compliance process changes.
  3. Develop a deep understanding of our company’s existing indirect tax positions at both a practical and legislative level. Articulate these as necessary to tax authorities during audits or proactively.
  4. Assist in managing tax authority and other audits/disputes with tax authorities, including associated litigation and third-party relationships.
  5. Proactively monitor the VAT landscape within EMEA, including case law and prospective legislation changes. Determine whether our indirect tax positions remain appropriate and communicate changes to our risk profile and/or opportunities to leadership.
  6. Support the Indirect Tax Director in identifying VAT risks and opportunities.
  7. Assist Tax Leadership in inputting to indirect tax lobbying via various channels and networking events.
  8. Serve as the day-to-day Indirect Tax Subject Matter Expert on wider EMEA regulatory projects linked to indirect taxes.
  9. Ensure open channels of communication with the Compliance team, so decisioning percolates through to VAT return procedures.
  10. Collaborate with the corporate tax/transfer pricing teams and other Indirect Tax colleagues in other regions to ensure effective and smooth business knowledge sharing.
  11. Work closely with the Tax Accounting team and local/regional finance teams to ensure VAT exposures are properly accounted for.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Significant years of high-quality indirect tax experience gained in a reputable professional environment and/or large multinational corporate environment.
  2. Proven multi-jurisdictional understanding of UK and EU indirect tax rules and emerging legislation across the EMEA region.
  3. A relevant professional qualification (i.e., accounting, tax, or legal).
  4. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synch analysis into solutions and impact.
  5. Clear communications skills, including the ability to distill and explain highly technical issues to a diverse audience.
  6. Proven relationship builder across functions, levels, and world zones, with a true collaborative orientation.
