Job Description:

**About the Role:**

We are seeking a dedicated English educator to join our team at EdStart Schools, working with students who face Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social and Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) challenges. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact on the academic and personal growth of students who may have faced barriers to learning in mainstream settings.

**Key Responsibilities:**

  • Maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of teaching English and adapt to wider curriculum and pastoral developments relevant to your work.
  • Plan tutorials, activities, lessons, and sequences of lessons to meet individual students' learning needs.
  • Implement various strategies and follow school policies for tutoring, teaching, behaviour management, and classroom management.
  • Involve parents and other agencies to ensure you promote students' health, safety, economic wellbeing, and achievement.
  • Assess, monitor, and record students' progress, providing clear and constructive feedback.
  • Set well-grounded expectations for students using prior knowledge and previous attainment data, aiming for progress as good as or better than similar students nationally.
  • Take responsibility for your own professional development, applying outcomes to improve teaching and students' learning.
  • Contribute to the policies, aspirations, and plans of learners, working as part of the EdStart teaching staff.

**Required Skills & Experience:**

  • A degree in English or a related subject, with PGCE or equivalent qualification.
  • At least 2 years' experience in teaching English, preferably to KS3 and KS4 students.
  • Strong ability to differentiate teaching methods to meet the needs of students with varying academic and emotional challenges.
  • A passion for working with students with SEN and SEMH, and commitment to their academic, emotional, and social development.
  • Experience using behaviour management strategies to support students with challenging behaviours.
  • Excellent communication skills, engaging students, parents, and colleagues in a constructive and supportive manner.
  • A patient, empathetic, and solutions-focused approach to teaching and supporting students.

**Performance Expectations:**

  • Student Engagement: Create an engaging classroom environment where students feel supported and confident in tackling English challenges.
  • Differentiated Learning: Use various teaching methods and resources to accommodate individual learning styles, ensuring each student can access and make progress in the English curriculum.
  • Assessment & Feedback: Regularly assess student understanding of English concepts, providing clear and actionable feedback to guide improvement.
  • Behaviour Management: Consistently implement effective behaviour management strategies to maintain a positive, focused, and productive classroom environment.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work collaboratively with colleagues, including SENCo and teaching assistants, to ensure the best outcomes for students. Maintain regular communication with parents and carers about their child's progress and areas for support.
  • Professional Growth: Engage in ongoing professional development to stay informed of best practices in teaching English to students with SEND and SEMH, integrating these into your classroom practice.

**Why Work at EdStart Schools?**

We are a school dedicated to providing the best possible educational experience for students with SEN and SEMH challenges. Our unique environment offers:

  • A supportive and inclusive setting, where you can make a real difference in students' lives.
  • Continuous professional development opportunities to learn and grow in the field of SEN and SEMH education.
  • The chance to work in a collaborative and compassionate team, united by the goal of helping students overcome barriers to learning and development.

**Safeguarding and Recruitment:**

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All staff are expected to share this commitment. This role is subject to a fully enhanced DBS check.
