At AECOM, we're delivering a better world. Whether improving your commute, keeping the lights on, providing access to clean water, or transforming skylines, our work helps people and communities thrive. We are the world's trusted infrastructure consulting firm, partnering with clients to solve the world's most complex challenges and build legacies for future generations.
Are you passionate about positively influencing the environmental performance of marine development projects? As a Marine Ecologist, you will have the opportunity to apply your skills, knowledge, and expertise on both national and international projects. We work across a diverse range of sectors, including high-profile power and infrastructure schemes (including floating offshore wind), national and international interconnectors, habitat restoration studies, flood defence schemes, and coastal developments (marinas, jetties, slipways, wharfs, and port developments etc.).
We are a national team, and flexible in terms of your office location – ideally, you would be based in one of our offices across the UK, including Basingstoke, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Croydon, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Plymouth, and St Albans, as well as taking advantage of our flexible hybrid working model. We are also flexible in terms of full or part-time working.
In this role, you will support and input to our growing portfolio of high-profile marine projects and help build and grow the team. As a senior member of AECOM's marine ecology team, you will provide technical marine ecological and marine consenting advice, internally and externally. You will manage inputs to a wide range of workstreams and deliverables across a really broad range of projects, including involvement in the full EIA or DCO development cycle of major projects.
You will be delivering marine ecology impact assessments, including ES chapters and associated assessments (HRA, MCZ, and WFD), and information to support the full range of licence and permitting applications needed for marine-based projects. Your role requires a critical eye for detail to ensure that our deliverables are produced to the highest quality standards and compliance with our rigorous quality management procedures.
You will have excellent writing and communication skills, able to tailor complex scientific information for different audiences. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to improve the environmental outcomes of our projects – this will include specialists in underwater acoustics, coastal processes, water scientists, and marine archaeologists, as well as EIA. You will contribute to work winning, including developing technical and fee proposals, as well as more general marketing and business development, including internal and external presentations and client liaison, to promote AECOM's environmental services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Management: Make effective use of your project management skills, appropriately managing resources and budgets (with support as applicable). Project management training to become an AECOM accredited PM is available for interested team members. You will also be required to support on procurement and management of specialist subcontractors when needed.
- Mentoring: Your role will require you to help develop and train more junior members of the team.
A recognised degree in a relevant discipline such as marine biology/ecology or a related biological or science discipline and ideally an appropriate professional membership (CIEEM or similar (or be eligible to qualify for this status);
Comprehensive marine ecological expertise with demonstrable experience in the preparation and review of specialist technical chapters and all associated impact assessments, including but not limited to HRA, MCZ, and WFD;
A detailed understanding of the marine consenting and licencing regimes across the UK with experience liaising with, and submitting licence applications, to the key regulatory bodies including the MMO, NRW, Scottish MD, and The Crown Estate;
Understanding of inputs from other technical disciplines, such as acoustics, coastal and geological processes as well as engineers and designers, able to define modelling and/or data required for the completion of marine assessments. This role also requires the ability to work closely with our clients and the provision of bespoke advice that helps clients to successfully deliver their goals;
Ability to provide technical advice and application of advanced scientific practices, theories, and technologies for a diverse range of marine projects;
AECOM is the world's trusted infrastructure consulting firm, delivering professional services throughout the project lifecycle – from advisory, planning, design, and engineering to program and construction management. Our teams are driven by a common purpose to deliver a better world through our unrivaled technical and digital expertise, a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and a commitment to environmental, social, and governance priorities.
You will have the flexibility you need to do your best work with hybrid work options. You will help us foster a safe and respectful workplace, where we invite everyone to bring their whole selves to work using their unique talents, backgrounds, and expertise to create transformational outcomes for our clients.
