About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled leader to head our Commercial Contracts Legal team at Co-operative Bank plc. As a key member of our legal department, you will play a critical role in providing expert and specialist business-focussed legal advice to our business teams, key stakeholders, and the procurement function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Team: Direct the provision of an appropriate range of legal services, including advising the business and procurement on intellectual property, data protection, and regulatory issues.
  • Co-ordinate and Manage Advice: Co-ordinate and manage advice from panel law firms to ensure effective and efficient delivery of legal services.
  • Develop and Implement Policy: Develop and implement policy, procedure, and know-how to improve efficiencies across the legal department and wider business.
  • Stay Up-to-Date with Regulatory Issues: Stay aware of current legal and regulatory issues that impact upon the commercial aspects of the retail finance sector and keep abreast of any future changes through proactive horizon scanning.
  • Drive Risk Management: Drive robust risk management and control across the area of accountability, ensuring effective systems and controls are in place and that all risks are identified, managed, monitored, and reported in line with the Bank Risk Management Framework.
  • Lead and Motivate the Team: Lead, motivate, manage, and develop the Commercial Contracts Legal team to ensure an effective working environment and consistently high performance.
  • Contribute to Legal Risk Management: Ensure the Commercial Contracts Legal team is actively contributing to the management of legal risk within the Bank.
  • Participate in Legal Risk Meetings: Contribute to monthly Legal risk meetings and KRI submissions.
Requirements
  • Qualified Commercial Contract Lawyer: Must be a qualified commercial contract lawyer with substantial post-qualification experience in providing legal advice in relation to retail and business banking.
  • Substantial Knowledge of the UK Banking Sector: Must have substantial knowledge of the UK banking sector, competitor awareness, and industry developments.
  • Knowledge of Relevant Processes and Procedure: Must have knowledge of relevant processes, procedure, and policy.
  • Analytical Thinking and Communication Skills: Must have analytical thinking, with the ability to understand key issues and support change, and excellent negotiating, networking, communication, and influencing skills to manage relationships and navigate challenges.
  • Ability to Draft Complex Contracts: Must have proven ability to draft complex and often heavily-negotiated commercial contracts.
  • Experience in the Financial Services Sector: Experience of working in the financial services sector (including dealing with regulators) would be an advantage.
  • Ability to Identify Commercial Risks: Must be able to identify commercial risks and propose innovative practical legal solutions.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of Internal and External Legal Risk: Must have in-depth knowledge and understanding of internal and external legal risk.
  • Significant Influencing Skills: Must have significant influencing skills and upwards management.
  • Ability to Lead and Develop a Team: Must be able to lead, manage, motivate, and develop a legal team through organisational change with positive impact on culture/values/engagement.
  • Unquestionable Values-Based Integrity: Must have unquestionable values-based integrity, with an unswerving commitment to the professional regulatory responsibilities of a solicitor, with behaviour consistently guided by what is "right" and not what is expedient.
