Job Description

The Role

The role of diabetic eye screener is a vital part of supporting individuals living with diabetes.

  • We conduct regular eye screenings to identify signs of diabetic retinopathy – a condition caused by changes to the blood vessels in the back of the eye due to diabetes. If left untreated, these changes can lead to vision loss.
  • The screener takes photographs of the retina to check for signs of damage to the vessels, performs an initial review of the images, and sends them for full assessment (grading).

Responsibilities

Each day, you will run your own screening clinic, which involves:

  • Setting it up safely and working with the venue's team
  • Welcoming service users
  • Conducting general eye health checks
  • Measuring visual acuity
  • Administering eye pupil dilation drops
  • Using photography equipment to take photos of the retina
  • Daily equipment cleaning/checks and occasional fault-finding/maintenance (with training)

Clinics are busy, but it is a rewarding role where you will use your people and organisational skills to ensure the day runs smoothly and you have all the necessary stock and equipment.

Qualifications

About You

Full training is provided if you're new to screening, so no experience is required, but it is an advantage if you come from a screening or healthcare background.

  • You will be enrolled on the national Health Screening Diploma course, which combines on-the-job training with personal study.
  • You will be able to use your initiative.
  • You will be confident with people and have patience and understanding to deal with service users from all backgrounds.
  • Travel is part of a normal day (to/from various clinic venues near your home base), so a full driving licence and access to a car are essential.
  • You will have a great eye for detail and a thorough approach to carrying out your work.
  • Minimum 5 GCSEs, including literacy, numeracy, and using IT, or equivalent experience.

Additional Information

We pride ourselves on offering an excellent benefits package, including an above-average pension scheme. When you join the team at NEC Software Solutions, you will be provided with:

  • Private Medical Cover funded by NEC for Employees (with the option to add family members at an additional cost)
  • 25 days paid holiday with the option to buy/sell (FTE)
  • 4 x basic salary life assurance cover funded by NEC (with the option to increase cover at an additional cost)
  • A Group Pension Plan with fantastic employer contributions up to a maximum of
  • A selection of flexible benefits to suit your individual needs
