About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Scientist - Earth Observation to join our team at the Met Office. As a key member of our research and development team, you will play a crucial role in developing satellite retrievals and improving the application of satellite datasets in the fields of meteorology, atmospheric composition, and other satellite-based hazard detection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and carry out research and development projects to improve Met Office systems and applications
  • Provide interpretation and analysis of satellite datasets
  • Document and present the work of the Met Office in internal reports, meetings, scientific journals, and external conferences
  • Provide scientific/technical advice to peers, management, and external stakeholders
  • Represent the Met Office nationally and internationally as required
Requirements
  • A background in Physical Science, Computer Science, or Data Science, including significant postgraduate experience (e.g. a PhD) in a relevant scientific area
  • Demonstrated ability to apply broad scientific knowledge to a range of specific scientific problems and scenarios relevant to the Weather Science area
  • Experience or aptitude to write scientific software. Ability to write, modify, and run scientific software codes
  • Demonstrated ability to be a strong team player with an ability to collaborate with scientific and technical colleagues. Willingness and ability to take responsibility for some deliverables in scientific group activities
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral, presentation, and listening)
