Deputy Head Teacher

Location: Bishops Stortford
Main Purpose of the RoleThe Deputy Head is responsible for managing a small site catering for a maximum of 20 pupils and overseeing the staff allocated to that site. The main purpose is to ensure effective learning for pupils, accommodating their changing emotional and social needs. Responsibilities include tailoring pupils' timetables and logistics, and communicating these effectively to staff, professionals, parents, and carers.
Deputy Heads are also expected to contribute to extracurricular activities and the wider school community, ensuring effective site management and leading on incidents. Additionally, the Deputy Head is responsible for health and safety on site.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesSet high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils by:
- Establishing a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, based on mutual respect.
- Ensuring goals are set that stretch and challenge ALL pupils.
- Demonstrating consistently the positive attitudes, values, and behaviors expected of pupils – leading by example.
- Ensuring the school environment promotes conducive learning and adheres to the Health & Safety Policy.
Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils by:
- Supporting the expectation that all planning is undertaken, and monitoring attainment, progress, and outcomes.
- Being aware of pupils' capabilities and prior knowledge, supporting staff to plan teaching accordingly.
- Ensuring the team provides required reporting and recording of pupil attainment and progress.
- Meeting deadlines for all assessment requirements – both academic and social/emotional.
- Leading the team in promoting good standards of literacy and the correct use of standard English.
Adapt teaching environment to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils by:
- Building effective relationships with pupils to assess their needs dynamically.
- Managing the environment effectively to reduce potential incidents.
Leading staff:
- Promoting the Schools Appraisal and supervision schedules.
- Supporting the implementation of the SEF and School Improvement Plan (SIP).
- Ensuring staff progress towards SIP areas identified in appraisal meetings.
- Supporting and challenging staff in achieving school priorities and targets.
- Keeping parents, carers, and professionals informed about curriculum, targets, and pupil progress.
- Supporting the Head Teacher in staff deployment and development.
- Maintaining a visible presence in the school to support a positive ethos.
- Leading by example to promote behavior expectations.
- Managing relationships with pupils and staff effectively.
- Ensuring staff are well-informed about pupil information and updates.
- Preparing logistics/timetables before school holidays and communicating them effectively.
- Making timely changes to the timetable to cover absences while maintaining consistency.
- Conducting daily handovers and de-briefs with the team.
- Attending required meetings.
Professional development and performance appraisal:
- Attending all CPD days and training as required.
- Reviewing own professional development and identifying training needs.
- Participating in the school's performance appraisal programme.
- Acting on feedback and being open to coaching and mentoring.
Fulfil wider professional responsibilities by:
- Contributing positively to the wider life and ethos of the school.
- Developing effective professional relationships with colleagues.
- Driving improvement of teaching through professional development.
- Communicating effectively with parents about pupil achievements and well-being.
- Celebrating pupil successes.
- Monitoring school systems effectively.
- Updating the Designated Teacher and SENCO about identified pupils.
- Ensuring the team follows school policies and systems.
Other responsibilities:
- Completing Designated Safeguarding Lead Level 3 training.
- Building good relationships with parents and the community.
- Committing to personal professional development.
- Managing school cars effectively.
- Carrying out other duties as assigned by the Headteacher/Executive Head/Directors.
- Recognizing that duties may vary without changing the post's general character.
- Conducting 'Keeping In Touch' days each half term.
Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree (required).
- QTS (required).
Experience
- Experience in managing a team.
- Experience working with pupils who have SEMH.
