About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Conservation Specialist to join our team at the British Museum. As a key member of our Department of Collection Care, you will play a crucial role in the preservation and conservation of our world-class collection.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assess and propose environmental management solutions for the long-term preservation of our collections.
  2. Lead on the care of the collection through environment monitoring, reporting, and data analysis.
  3. Develop and implement guidance for colleagues and stakeholders on preventive conservation and collection care.
  4. Coordinate and improve the management and maintenance of our collection environmental monitoring system.
  5. Solve complex problems regarding preventive conservation, applying expertise, judgement, innovation, and adaptability.
About You
  1. Recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level or equivalent, with emphasis on preventive conservation.
  2. Considerable post-qualification experience of working in the heritage sector.
  3. Proficient and demonstrable practical preventive conservation skills.
  4. Strong understanding of mechanisms involved in material deterioration.
  5. Demonstrable knowledge of contemporary principles and practice in preventive conservation.
  6. Experience of devising preventive measures.
  7. Involvement in display, loans, and storage-related activities.
  8. Understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision-making.
  9. Experience of planning own work and objectives to deliver set objectives on time and to budget.
  10. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  11. Open and effective communicator.
