The Role

  • Ensure the quality of assigned deliverables and compliance with specified requirements, codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with project managers to generate and maintain detailed project plans and deliverable schedules.
  • Identify resource requirements and request resources as needed.
  • Report progress of engineering deliverables against specified work plans.
  • Source ideas and innovation from multiple sources and generate value-adding options to achieve the optimum engineered solution.
  • Identify applicable legislation and ensure compliance.
  • Develop technical specifications that define the totality of requirements for engineering solutions.
  • Assess the specific elements that contribute to the equipment design and document justification/arguments that substantiate it.
  • Conduct risk assessments, identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards by design.
  • Ensure work under their supervision is consistent in the use of software tools, deliverable protocols, formats, templates, numbering, and storage.
  • Support the production of technical information in tenders.
  • Be the key point of contact with customer stakeholders and build collaborative relationships.
  • Identify the requirements for, and organize, and undertake design reviews.

The Person

  • Hold a degree with honors or level 6 equivalent (ideally).
  • Be a Chartered Engineer or equivalent.
  • Have several years' experience working in design engineering.
  • Have a number of years' experience working within a highly regulated industry (e.g., Nuclear).
  • Be proficient in the use of standard Microsoft Office software such as Word/Excel.
  • Be competent in the use of CAD software/digital tools. Understand and apply the company management system.
  • Understand and apply design codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Understand and apply law (Acts and Regulations), codes of practice, and designated standards appropriate to the scope of work.
  • Have a breadth of demonstrable experience of design and detailing (appropriate to discipline) of plant and equipment.
  • Understand the NEC suite of contracts, change control methodology, and common project management practices.
  • Have a breadth of experience of respective discipline (e.g., Mechanical or Electrical). Demonstrable capability of supervision for a small team of engineers and designers (up to 15 but frequently less) in the definition, implementation, and delivery of engineering work packages.
  • Have commercial understanding, budgeting & cost control, reporting practices.
  • Prepare and maintain schedules for activities and events, taking account of dependencies and resource requirements.
  • Provide leadership within an engineering department and act as a custodian of resource and expertise.
