Quantum Radiation Sensor Engineer

About the Project

">

Single-electron quantum devices hold significant potential as radiation sensors for both fundamental and applied science applications.

">

This PhD project aims to replace conventional field-effect transistors with single-electron transistors as radiation sensors. The goal is to harness their unique properties, such as sensitivities on the order of and operation from dc to radio frequencies, greatly exceeding those of conventional transistors.

">

Preliminary work by the supervisory team has demonstrated that single-electron transistors fabricated from chemical vapor deposition grown graphene via feedback-controlled breakdown can operate up to room temperature. The fabrication process is scalable, enabling arrays of hundreds of graphene single-electron transistors on 1x1 cm2 to be created.

">

The project will investigate how neutron irradiation leads to heating and/or charge generation in the device substrate, detectable by arrays of graphene single-electron transistors. State-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities at Queen Mary University will be utilized, including scanning thermal probe lithography and direct laser write, thin film and atomic layer deposition, and oxygen plasma etching.

">

A fully automated wafer-scale probe station for fabrication via feedback-controlled breakdown and device characterization will also be employed. Assembly and packaging, including manual and automated wire bonders, are part of the project scope.

">

Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
