Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Newcastle University Full time

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our interdisciplinary research team at Newcastle University. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative project involving Professors Russell Davenport, Sam Wilson, and Tom Curtis, as well as a Research Technician. This project will investigate the environmental and process factors affecting nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from trickling filters (TFs) and provide evidence for the monitoring and mitigation of such greenhouse gases.

The UK water industry has set an ambitious goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in line with their Net Zero 2030 Routemap. However, there is a specific knowledge gap around the potential N2O emissions from TFs. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a scientifically robust study, performing experiments at scale to investigate the environmental and process factors affecting N2O emissions from TFs.

This full-time position is available for a fixed term of 9 months, with the possibility of extending to 12 months. The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Newcastle University campus, with occasional travel to other locations. Interviews will be held in due course.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a scientifically robust study on N2O emissions from TFs
  • Perform experiments at scale to investigate environmental and process factors
  • Provide evidence for the monitoring and mitigation of N2O emissions

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field
  • Experience in environmental research
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

What We Offer

  • A competitive salary and benefits package
  • The opportunity to work on a high-profile project with a leading research team
  • Professional development opportunities
