About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Head of Human Resources to join our team at the Medical Research Council – Mary Lyon Centre. As a key member of our HR team, you will be responsible for providing a professional and proactive HR service to our management team and staff.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of strategic HR management, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a challenging business environment. You will have a strong understanding of employment law and HR policies, as well as experience in managing employee relations casework, including absence management, disciplinary and grievances.

You will be responsible for ensuring that our HR operations run smoothly and effectively, delivering maximum value to the organization. This will involve developing strong and positive working relationships with managers and staff, providing proactive specialist advice and support, and demonstrating a flexible, risk-based approach.

We are looking for a motivated, hands-on, and positive individual with a can-do attitude. If you are an HR professional with a passion for delivering high-quality HR services and making a real impact, we would love to hear from you.

About You
  • CIPD qualification
  • Degree level or demonstrable equivalent work-place experience
  • Proven experience as an HR Generalist at HR Manager / HRBP level (3 years+)
  • Line Manager experience
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of general human resources policies and procedures
  • Good knowledge of employment law
  • Managed employee relations casework, including absence management, disciplinary and grievances etc.
  • Outstanding knowledge of MS Office; MS Excel, HRIS systems will be a plus
  • Aptitude in problem-solving
  • High attention to detail
  • Presentation skills, to be able to develop and deliver workshops
  • Desire to work as a team, with a results-driven approach
  • Exposure of working within a unionised environment
