The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled postdoctoral researcher to join our team at Newcastle University, working on the UKRI-funded SYMPHONY project. The successful candidate will contribute to the project's goals, which involve combining various data sources to perform asteroseismic modelling of massive stars and measure their masses, ages, and interior rotation profiles.
The SYMPHONY project is a collaborative effort between Newcastle University and other institutions, focusing on galaxy evolution, cosmology, compact objects, and MHD simulations. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work closely with the project team, including Dr. Dominic Bowman, to achieve the project's objectives.
The advertised position is a 2-year fixed-term postdoctoral research associate position, with a possible extension until the SYMPHONY project end date, dependent on available funding. The salary is on a progressive scale, with generous funds available for travel, training, and other support.
To be successful in this role, you will have a strong research background in spectropolarimetry of early-type stars and experience in related analysis methods relevant to asteroseismology of massive stars. You will also be expected to present your research at conferences and symposia, as well as contribute to the development of research proposals and publications.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research along the lines of the SYMPHONY project programme
- Work successfully in an interdisciplinary research team and wider collaborators to publish world-leading research
- Present outputs of the research to scientific and non-scientific audiences, in written and oral form
- Contribute to the positive culture and general strengths of the research group and the School
Requirements
- PhD awarded in a relevant discipline (or exceptionally equivalent professional experience)
- Honours degree in a relevant discipline
- Excellent technical skills in analysing and interpreting data sets
- Strong research background in spectropolarimetry of early-type stars
- Experience in related analysis methods relevant to asteroseismology of massive stars
