The Costs Budgeter will play a key role in preparing Precedent Hs, Precedent Rs, and Precedent Ts, as well as advising and negotiating with clients and the main team on costs budgeting matters. This role also involves payables work and a mixed caseload.
Key Responsibilities- Manage own caseload using the in-house case management system, ensuring timely and accurate maintenance of records, billing, and management information.
- Draft and update Precedent H costs budgets.
- Prepare Precedent R costs budgets on opponent's Precedent H costs budgets and comply with Costs Case Management Orders, conducting subsequent negotiations.
- Meet daily chargeable hour targets, manage workload to meet service level agreements, and critical dates.
- Delegate tasks to other team members where appropriate.
- Review files, set strategies, and identify strengths and weaknesses, preparing a document to reflect this.
- Prepare cost strategy reports, updating throughout the life of the case.
- Provide written updates to clients detailing case activity, ensuring they receive up to date and accurate information about progress.
- Undertake periodic reviews of files in line with client requirements.
- Negotiate costs advantageous to clients.
- Deal with correspondence and telephone calls.
- Advise the main team handler on Costs and Case Management Conference (CCMC).
- Experience in a similar cost budgeting or drafting role, either claimant or defendant.
- Experience handling confidential and sensitive information securely.
- Previous experience of client liaison (internal and/or external).
- Previous experience of handling own caseload.
- Flexible and able to respond to requests, with a quick response in high-priority situations.
- Experience preparing pleadings and Court documentation related to the budget process.
- Good standard of education, including Maths and English.
- Good telephone manner and ability to communicate effectively.
- In-depth understanding of costs management and detailed assessment processes, cost case law, and the litigation process.
- Ability to use own initiative, plan and prioritise workloads, and make decisions.
- Excellent listening and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and act as part of a team.
- Proficient IT skills, particularly in Excel.
- Education - Degree and/or LPC and/or ALCD or equivalent.
- Conducted own advocacy.
