Main Job Purpose:

To serve as the fourth in charge/supervisor in the absence of the manager and deputy manager, and as a senior member of the childcare team. The role combines the responsibilities of a practitioner with those of a manager, ensuring high-quality and best-practice standards are maintained at the service. Close cooperation with the manager, deputy manager, and staff team is essential.

Overall Duties:
  1. Report to the manager and deputy manager.
  2. Act as the designated person in charge in the absence of the manager and deputy.
  3. Be responsible, in consultation with the manager and deputy, for recruitment, management, training, motivation, and performance of all staff.
  4. Ensure a dynamic and emergent curriculum is delivered to meet the individual needs of children attending.
  5. Monitor and ensure that all agreed quality and safety standards are maintained at all times.
  6. Monitor child protection issues, parents' concerns, complaints, near-misses, incidents, and accidents, and take necessary remedial action immediately. Record all issues and actions, and report child protection concerns to the LADO or relevant multi-disciplinary team.
  7. Carry out the role in the absence of the manager and deputy as the designated person in charge.
  8. Support the manager and deputy in developing the service to its full potential, ensuring opportunities for additional funding are identified and applications are completed in a timely manner.
  9. Stay up-to-date on matters related to early childhood care and education, including media, emails, networking, and other relevant information.
  10. Establish, develop, and maintain professional working relationships with external agencies and the Early Intervention Team.
  11. Monitor occupancy levels to ensure they are maintained at maximum capacity levels, in line with the service's ethos and objectives, and to ensure financial sustainability.
  12. Maintain the building to a high level of hygiene.
  13. Be a designated first aid person.
  14. Be the designated fire safety person.
  15. Be available to the Early Years inspector during an inspection and ensure all necessary information is provided.
Children:
  1. Work in a room as a relief worker when staff are absent.
  2. Ensure all practice is child-directed.
  3. Work with existing staff to provide a team approach to delivering childcare and education of the highest standard, acting as a positive role model and providing leadership to all childcare staff, in accordance with the EYFS.
  4. Ensure the protection of children in accordance with the Children Act 2014.
  5. Ensure developmental observations and EYFS assessments are carried out on children and recorded appropriately.
  6. Ensure an appropriate care plan is developed for children with additional needs.
Colleagues:
  1. Provide direction and support to other early years practitioners in relation to childcare practice, the curriculum, transitions, and routines.
  2. Ensure adult:child ratios are compliant with the Early Years Framework.
  3. Assist in directing and supporting students.
  4. Encourage colleagues to maintain a good working atmosphere in the service.
  5. Deal with non-performing staff in accordance with policies and procedures.
  6. Undertake regular review meetings with all colleagues and monitor their performance.
  7. In consultation with the manager, be responsible for the well-being of colleagues, ensuring disciplinary and grievance procedures are adhered to in line with legislation.
  8. Monitor staffing levels to ensure the service is adequately staffed daily.
  9. Maintain a list of appropriate cover staff.
  10. Manage staff annual leave requests to ensure the service is adequately staffed at all times.
  11. Maintain accurate personnel records for all employees, cover staff, and trainees.
  12. Manage breaks and lunch breaks.
  13. Support staff in delivering a quality childcare service with a strong emphasis on child development and social inclusion.
Management/Administration:
  1. Make decisions and take actions in the absence of the manager and deputy, ensuring the efficient running of the service.
  2. Record incidents or accidents.
  3. Record fees paid.
  4. Record visitors or phone calls.
  5. Monitor staff attendance.
Health and Safety:
  1. Be responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of children and colleagues.
  2. Bring to the attention of the manager any possible hazards or risks.
  3. Ensure all Covid-19 procedures are followed.
Parents:
  1. Promote the service by giving a good professional image to parents and visitors.
  2. Meet parents when necessary.
  3. Ensure colleagues greet and meet parents in an appropriate manner.
  4. Ensure feedback is given to parents in a constructive and encouraging manner.
Training and Meetings:
  1. Attend and participate in meetings or training as required.
  2. Encourage other colleagues to participate in training.
Flexibility:

Be flexible in your approach to the role.

Communication:

Communicate with all relevant personnel frequently, in a straightforward, accurate, and professional manner.

Confidentiality:

The person appointed to this job shall not disclose any confidential information during or after employment, respecting the employer, work, children, parents, or staff.

Other Duties:
  1. Be knowledgeable of all policies and procedures and ensure they are followed by all colleagues.
  2. Conduct site walks to ensure the building is in perfect order and children and colleagues are safe.
  3. Perform any other reasonable duties assigned from time to time.
