Role Overview

Kent County Council is seeking individuals to join its three-person Remuneration Panel. The Panel's primary responsibility is to advise the Council on the Members Allowances Scheme.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide recommendations to the Council on the basic allowance payable to all 81 Members (Councillors).
  • Recommend roles and responsibilities for which a special responsibility allowance should be payable and the amount for each such allowance.
  • Advise on miscellaneous expenses, including travel allowances, subsistence allowances, and dependent carer allowances.
  • Make recommendations on allowances for co-opted members.

Requirements

Some understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Members and knowledge or experience of finance or local government would be beneficial. Political impartiality is essential. Applicants should not be affiliated with the Council, either by membership of a local political party or group or by close association with a Councillor or employee.

Term and Workload

The position is a four-year term, with an allowance paid. The pattern of work and workload will vary depending on whether the Panel is reviewing the scheme as a whole or part thereof.

Panel Membership

Panel members are appointed to a four-year term. Appointments to consecutive terms are permitted.
