About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head Gardener to lead our team at Belton Estate, a 17th Century mansion with internationally significant art and architecture, surrounded by 1200 acres of spectacular parkland, gardens, and pleasure grounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a vision for the gardens, working closely with the property leadership team to integrate the gardens into the whole estate experience.
  • Manage a team of four full-time staff and a growing community of volunteers, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality presentation and creative flair for gardening.
  • Work with the visitor experience team to champion the cause of gardening and engage visitors with the beauty, nature, and narratives of the garden.
  • Ensure inclusive leadership and work with other members of the team to make changes that improve access to the garden.
  • Manage operational risk and compliance requirements relevant to horticulture, and ensure the safety and compliance within the garden.

Requirements

  • Proven experience of managing a diverse garden throughout the seasons.
  • Excellent knowledge of plants and plant care, with a higher level of horticultural experience supported by appropriate qualifications to RHS level 3 or above.
  • Enthusiasm for horticulture, dedication to high-quality presentation, and a creative flair for gardening.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team, setting high standards for yourself and those around you.
  • Experience with managing operational risk and compliance requirements relevant to horticulture.
