Job Description

As a Senior Writer at The Athletic, you will be responsible for conceiving, reporting, and writing unique, analytical stories covering professional football. You will work closely with our team to deliver authoritative, must-read data-focused stories that drive the national conversation in football.

Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to our daily and weekly coverage of football, including live pieces, data requests, and collaborative projects.
  2. Develop and apply advanced metrics to written work to deliver high-quality content to our audience.
  3. Collaborate with our data team to identify trends, patterns, and key insights using various football datasets.
  4. Leverage your expertise to communicate data insights effectively in written or audio format to different audiences.
  5. Contribute to our podcast, social media, and other content platforms.
  6. Participate in our editorial meetings to discuss story ideas and editorial direction.
  7. Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in football and the sports industry.
  8. Contribute to our content strategy and help shape the direction of our sports coverage.

Requirements

  1. Minimum 5+ years of experience in sports journalism, data analysis, or a related field.
  2. Proficiency in statistical programming languages, preferably R and/or Python, for data analysis and data visualization.
  3. Experience with data visualization tools and techniques.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Deep knowledge of football and its various metrics.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively.
  7. Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  8. Fluency in English.
