The Cambian Group is a leading provider of specialist behavioural health services for children and adults in the UK. Our work in the UK encompasses various specialist services, including children's specialist education, children's residential services, adult mental health, acquired brain injury, and fostering services.
Cambian Dilston College is an independent specialist provider of further education in the North East of England, offering 38 or 52-week residential placements or day placements for young people with learning difficulties, Autism, challenging behaviour, and complex needs. The young people attending our college are aged between 16 and 25 years old.
Purpose and Summary of the Role
To work with young people and adults to safeguard and promote their safety and welfare at all times. To support our young people to feel a sense of belonging and influence within their home, providing individualised day-to-day care and support.
To provide and encourage students to access opportunities to engage in hobbies and experiences in order to attain positive outcomes, boost confidence, and improve resilience while increasing their levels of independence and self-regulation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the Deputy Home Manager and Head of Care (Registered Manager) in the management and developmental of high-quality residential education and care resources for students within Dilston College, undertaking delegated supervisory management responsibilities.
- To provide management to less experienced staff to ensure the development of best practice in residential care and optimal outcomes for students.
- Safeguard and promote the safety and welfare of students at all times; this is to be achieved primarily by knowing and following Cambian Dilston College's policies and procedures, including the instructions of senior staff, and acting in the best interests of the young person.
- Where emergency situations arise, to have in your practice at all times the need to protect young people from experiencing significant harm (whether physical, psychological, emotional, financial, etc.). Where this is consistent with your duties, to take reasonable steps to protect your own health and safety and that of others.
- When working with young people, to demonstrate a variety of approaches and techniques that seek to minimise risk and promote their personal development; and to key work students in a supportive and structured manner that teaches them the skills in a way that is adapted to their individual needs and wishes.
- Assist in creating a caring, stimulating, and safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
- Protect and promote the positive reputation of Cambian Dilston College.
- Actively engage and consult with the young people within the home and where required advocate on their behalf.

- At least 2 years' experience working in care – Essential
- Experience working with young people or adults with learning disability, challenging behaviour. Experience working in a supported living setting.
Requirements for an Enhanced DBS and reference checking will be undertaken in line with government regulations and safer recruitment best practice. Whilst we endeavour to keep the recruitment process as short as possible due to the nature of these important checks, it may extend the processing time.
We will conduct online searches of shortlisted candidates. This check will be part of a safeguarding check, and the search will purely be based on whether an individual is suitable to work with children. As care must be taken to avoid unconscious bias and any risk of discrimination, a person who will not be on the appointment panel will conduct the search and will only share information if and when findings are relevant and of concern.
