Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Chief Engineer to join our team at First Recruitment Group. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for providing strategic guidance and technical expertise to inform and direct policies, projects, and programmes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Delivery: Provide strategic guidance based on knowledge and experience to inform and direct policies, projects, and programmes.
  • Provide nuclear safety input to design projects, ensuring nuclear safety requirements are incorporated.
  • Prepare and agree the Safety Case Strategy.
  • Manage delivery for the work undertaken within their agreed remit against cost and programme to the satisfaction of Key Stakeholders.
  • Produce, verify, and approve calculations, analyses, design basis documentation, and technical reports.
  • Act as the Point of Contact for Key Stakeholders, ensuring adequate communication between the Engineering Delivery Team, Construction Experts, Operators, Safety Assessors, Site Safety Case Managers, and other Stakeholders.
  • Lead and participate in Hazard Identification studies.
  • Coordinate production of safety submissions including all specialist safety input.
  • Support submissions through various review and approval stages.
  • Review and approve design changes, concessions, and technical queries.
  • Manage project risks by closing out safety items on the Technical Issues and Risk Register Database.
  • Raise quality plans for single discipline work packages.
  • Produce, verify, and approve technical Scopes of Work, assessing tender returns, then verifying/assessing and/or approving the outputs to ensure that design sub-contract requirements are met.
  • Feed back lessons learnt for use on future stages of the current project and other projects.
  • Knowledge in specialist areas of safety case (e.g., submarines, hydrogen, chemotoxic, etc.).

Bid Support

  • Review bids and designs.
  • Provide nuclear safety input to bids.
  • Produce estimates for bids.

Growth

  • Build and maintain customer relationships.
  • Grow the business through the identification and development of opportunities.
  • Represent the discipline to customers, regulatory, and external bodies.

Functional

  • Maintain awareness of wider industry processes and project developments.
  • Review industry best practice for implementation.
  • Undertake any special duties as specified by the Functional Leader.
  • Ensure that deployed resources are suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
  • Direct and supervise the work of technical specialists within the same discipline.

Processes

  • Input to the development of processes and procedures that are pragmatic, proportionate, scalable, and widely applicable.
  • Ensure processes and procedures are correctly applied to technical activities.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience working in support of the UK submarine programme and new nuclear build.
  • Individuals with broader non-nuclear safety case expertise may also be considered.
