Lead Operations Manager sought for Urban Design Group

The Urban Design Group (UDG) is in search of a dynamic Lead Operations Manager (part or full-time to be negotiated) to oversee the organization’s daily functions, manage a small team of part-time personnel, assist in organizing and facilitating events, and collaborate with us to achieve our charitable goals.

About You and the Role

We aim to appoint a senior leader who will be accountable for the management of a diverse range of supporting activities. Some of these activities will focus on internal operations, such as engaging with and enhancing our membership, resources, and financial sustainability, while others will be outward-facing, including organizing and executing events, as well as managing our digital presence. Your responsibilities will include:

the ability to work autonomously and take a hands-on approach as we develop a permanent support team; a passion for collaborating with our members, Executive Committee, and Trustees; and a proactive and self-driven attitude.

While extensive knowledge of urban design is not mandatory, familiarity with the built environment sector and a keen interest in promoting effective placemaking would be advantageous. Candidates should possess a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a charitable or business setting, with a proven track record of managing various operations within a small to medium-sized organization, including some leadership responsibilities. Experience in expanding a membership organization will be beneficial.

Although we have an office location, we offer the flexibility of hybrid or remote work arrangements, with an agreed-upon regular presence in our office. You will be involved in both in-person and virtual events.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

Collaborate with the Strategic Director, Chair, Executive Board, and Editorial Board to formulate a new strategic plan and objectives for the Urban Design Group for the upcoming years. Ensure the operationalization and timely execution of this strategic plan and objectives, in alignment with established KPIs.

Internal Operations

Develop and manage effective processes and systems for the Urban Design Group's operations and activity monitoring. Document and report on the Urban Design Group's activities for internal and external oversight, governance, and compliance requirements.

Financial Oversight

Prepare the annual budget for the Urban Design Group in collaboration with the Strategic Director, Treasurer, Executive Board, and Trustees, and oversee daily financial management, tracking expenditures against the approved budget, and providing regular updates. Supervise the investment of the charity's reserves in coordination with the Treasurer, Executive, and Trustees.

Human Resources

Manage HR processes for the Urban Design Group, including working with the Strategic Director to establish a suitable staffing structure to achieve the UDG's strategic objectives, leading recruitment and line management of staff and volunteers while ensuring adherence to EDI principles.

Event Management

Oversee and facilitate the delivery of the Urban Design Group's annual event program across the UK, including conferences, seminars, tours, webinars, and workshops.

Project Management

Manage various initiatives and projects of the Urban Design Group, ensuring their effective execution. Facilitate and operationalize the Urban Design Group's initiative to strengthen the interface and exchange between practice, research, and policy through engagement with academic institutions and policymakers. Line-manage and oversee a team of staff and volunteers, ensuring that the Urban Design Group's work is effectively communicated to its members and externally through various channels. Develop strategies to generate additional revenue for the organization through sponsorships, grants, and other funding sources to enhance the Urban Design Group's capacity to influence and support others.
