Radiation Safety Research Scientist

Position Overview
The Radiation Hazards and Emergencies Department (RHED) is at the forefront of the UK Health Security Agency's (UKHSA) efforts in emergency preparedness and response for radiation and nuclear incidents. This department also offers guidance and support to governmental bodies and external organizations regarding emergency protocols and countermeasures.
The Radiochemistry Group plays a crucial role in delivering analytical assessments of environmental and biological specimens to bolster emergency response strategies, while also catering to a diverse clientele through commercial services. All operations are conducted under the stringent ISO 17025 accreditation.
The successful candidate will engage in a variety of laboratory tasks, including the preparation and analysis of radiochemical and instrumental data on environmental, biological, and quality control samples, in alignment with the Radiochemistry Group's commercial agreements and quality assurance programs. Additionally, they will be equipped to perform expedited analyses of samples in the aftermath of a nuclear event or emergency, supporting other UKHSA initiatives.
Responsibilities will encompass the following:
Key Responsibilities:
- Sample Management: Efficiently handle diverse sample types, ensuring accurate tracking through internal systems, logging customer samples, and maintaining communication with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Analytical Procedures: Conduct analyses using a variety of radiochemical methodologies and instruments, adhering to ISO 17025 UKAS standards. Evaluate and interpret data, verifying calculations and data entries to identify trends or anomalies, and collaborate with senior personnel for troubleshooting.
- Field Sampling: Occasionally travel off-site to collect environmental samples for subsequent laboratory analysis.
- Laboratory Maintenance: Uphold cleanliness and organization within the laboratory environment, managing sample storage and disposal in accordance with established protocols.
- Quality Assurance: Perform daily quality control checks and oversee designated laboratory equipment. Participate in internal audits as necessary.
- Emergency Preparedness: Engage in emergency drills to refine rapid analytical techniques and be prepared to conduct analyses following actual or suspected radiation emergencies.
- Additional Duties: Undertake any other relevant tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.
Detailed Role Description:
The RHED is pivotal in leading the UKHSA's initiatives for emergency readiness in the face of radiation and nuclear crises. It also provides essential support and advice to governmental and external entities regarding emergency response strategies.
The Radiochemistry Group is tasked with offering analytical services for environmental and biological samples, which are vital for emergency response guidance and commercial operations. This includes collaboration with various sectors, including defense and governmental agencies, all conducted under ISO 17025 standards.
Upon completion of training in accordance with ISO 17025, the selected individual will be responsible for a spectrum of laboratory activities, including sample preparation, radiochemical analysis, and instrumental assessments. They will also be involved in rapid sample analysis in response to nuclear incidents, contributing to UKHSA's broader objectives.
As the role evolves, opportunities will arise to manage small-scale projects that align with the Radiochemistry Group's goals, such as research initiatives or enhancements to existing methodologies.
Travel within the UK may be required to support contractual obligations or to engage with the scientific community, including participation in conferences.
The individual may also be tasked with additional responsibilities to support the Radiochemistry Group, such as managing laboratory supplies and equipment, or other duties as directed by team leadership.
Candidate Profile:
Essential Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in a laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in operating scientific instruments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with basic chemical and analytical techniques.
- Competence in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently.
- Experience in fast-paced environments.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Prior experience working within a formal quality assurance framework.
- Experience in analyzing industrial or environmental samples.
- Strong communication skills.
Benefits:
In addition to a competitive salary, the UK Health Security Agency offers a comprehensive benefits package, including contributions towards a defined benefit pension scheme, tailored learning and development opportunities, flexible working arrangements, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace culture.
