Position Overview

This role is a fixed-term opportunity designed to fulfill the requirements of our service.

An exceptional chance has emerged within Velindre Cancer Centre for an Oncology Clinical Research Nurse to join the research delivery team, offering patients the chance to engage in Early Phase Clinical Trials.

We are looking to recruit a band 6 Registered Nurse with experience in oncology nursing and a strong interest in clinical research. This role will facilitate the implementation of advanced and innovative therapies while collaborating with a specialized team of Research Nurses from both Velindre Cancer Centre and the Research Delivery Team at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. While prior research experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory as comprehensive in-house training will be provided.

This position necessitates flexibility, as the successful candidate will be required to operate across two locations, working alongside a dedicated research team to establish, collaborate, and execute trials for the new Cardiff Cancer Research Hub.

This collaborative effort, along with The Cardiff Cancer Research Hub, aims to enhance research accessibility for patients in South Wales and beyond. This role is essential to ensure we possess the necessary nursing expertise and capacity to achieve this, in alignment with Velindre Cancer Centre's overarching ambitions in Cancer Research and Development.

The position may involve some out-of-hours responsibilities, depending on service needs and specific clinical trial requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the execution of the early phase trial portfolio under the guidance of the Early Phase Nurse Team Lead.
  • Oversee the coordination and implementation of research protocols.
  • Advocate for clinical trials and raise awareness of the Velindre Clinical Trials Unit, as well as the early phase portfolio and activities in South East Wales.

Proficiency in Welsh is preferred for this position; however, applications from both English and/or Welsh speakers are encouraged.

Act as a deputy for the Band 7 Team Lead in their absence.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • 1st Level Registered Nurse with evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Post-basic qualification in Cancer Care/Research or a willingness to pursue this qualification.
  • Understanding of the research process and regulatory standards, including ICH-GCP.

Desirable

  • Clinical Research Qualification.
  • Teaching qualification.
  • ECDL.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience at Band 5, with a background in oncology.
  • Previous involvement in clinical trials.

Desirable

  • Experience with Phase 1/2 trials.
  • ITU/HDU experience.

Skills and Attributes

Essential

  • Proficient in venepuncture/cannulation.
  • Ability to work independently with excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Effective patient advocacy.
  • IT Skills - proficient in WORD, Internet, and Email.

Desirable

  • Teaching and presentation skills.
  • Counseling skills.
  • Experience in Systemic Anticancer Treatment administration (SACT).
