Job Title: Firmware Engineer at Canonical

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, is seeking a Firmware Engineer to join their Kernel Team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ACPI and BIOS/UEFI, with experience in Linux kernel development. This role involves collaborating with a global team, working on PC platform stability, and contributing to the Ubuntu Linux kernel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a distributed team to ensure seamless kernel development
  • Resolve complex BIOS, UEFI, and ACPI issues to maintain platform stability
  • Contribute to the Firmware Test Suite to enhance kernel quality
  • Develop and enhance tooling for Ubuntu Linux on x86 platforms to improve performance
  • Submit and review kernel patches to ensure high-quality code

Requirements:

  • Proficient in C programming with a strong understanding of kernel fundamentals
  • Experience with ACPI and UEFI, with a focus on kernel development
  • Familiarity with git and x86 bootstrap process to ensure efficient kernel development
  • Knowledge of operating system kernel fundamentals to drive innovation
  • Willingness to collaborate with international teams and travel occasionally

Desirable Skills:

  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting to automate kernel development tasks
  • Experience with coreboot project to enhance kernel development
  • Knowledge of Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging to ensure smooth kernel deployment
  • Linux kernel patching and debugging skills to resolve complex issues
  • Understanding of Devicetree, u-boot, and other kernel-related technologies
